Ceilidh dancing, haggis dumplings and caber-tossing Muay Thai boxers were among the attractions at this year’s Shanghai Highland Games, which organisers say was even bigger than last year’s celebration.

The annual event, organised by Shanghai Scottish in partnership with the National Piping Centre and That’s Shanghai, took place at Nord Anglia International School on Saturday 12 September, drawing a big turnout from Scottish expats and Shanghai locals of all ages.

Mackie’s of Scotland, which is soon set to open an ice cream parlour in Shanghai under a £1 million China export deal announced this summer, was among the sponsors and vendors backing this year’s event.

Co-organiser Sarah Armstrong said: “We received so much positive feedback from the Scottish community about having Mackie’s, such a well-loved Scottish brand, supporting the Games. We were also really proud to be able to showcase Mackie’s to our wider international community here in Shanghai.”

Angus Hayhow, head of marketing and export manager at Mackie’s of Scotland, told Scotland China Brief: “We were delighted to sponsor this year’s Shanghai Highland Games and were very pleased to see the event was a great success.

“Great to see so many celebrating Scottish culture – and ice cream – overseas!”
