Chinese energy storage manufacturer Sungrow has been named as supplier of the battery energy storage system for a 400MW development in North Ayrshire which achieved financial close this week.

Revera Energy, a global independent energy platform backed by US investment firm Carlyle, is behind the 400 MW / 800 MWh Hunterston Battery Energy Storage System, located just north of the B6 boundary, one of the UK’s most persistent power grid bottlenecks.

Construction will commence immediately, with commercial operations expected in Q3 2028.

Sungrow, headquartered in Hefei, Anhui province, will supply the battery energy storage system (BESS) and provide a long-term service agreement for the project. The company is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of solar inverters and battery storage systems, and has become an increasingly significant presence in the UK and European energy storage markets.

The contract is one of the largest Chinese-linked battery storage supply deals in Scotland to date, and reflects the extent to which Chinese manufacturers now dominate global battery production. Sungrow, along with CATL and BYD, has emerged as a key supplier to Western energy infrastructure projects.

The project is financed by non-recourse senior debt from Santander, Barclays, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and NatWest.

OCU Group has been engaged as the Balance of Plant contractor and O&M provider. Danske Commodities and bp will provide trading and optimisation services, with bp providing a long-term tolling structure and Danske Commodities providing a long-term floor structure. Revera will oversee construction and long-term asset management.

Hunterston BESS is Revera’s second UK transmission-connected BESS to reach financial close in 2026, following the 200 MW / 400 MWh Windyhill project, which is on track for commercial operations in Q4 2027.

Revera has up to an additional 400 MW / 1,600 MWh of BESS capacity with approved planning consents, land rights, grid access and 15-year capacity market contracts. With up to 1 GW / 2.8 GWh, the company’s UK BESS portfolio would become one of the largest in Europe.
