Professor Hany Eteiba, President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, has delivered the prestigious AJS McFadzean Oration at the Hong Kong College of Physicians Annual Scientific Meeting 2026, as part of the Hong Kong institution’s 40th anniversary.
His lecture examined how rapid technological advancements can be integrated into healthcare without losing the foundational values of patient-centred care.
The annual AJS McFadzean Oration is the College’s most prestigious named lecture, established in honour of Scottish-born Professor AJS McFadzean (1914–1974), who was Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong from 1948 to 1974. His visionary leadership laid the foundations for clinical excellence, physician training and subspecialty development in Hong Kong.
Professor McFadzean was born in Troon in 1914 and studied medicine at the University of Glasgow, graduating with honours in 1936. He was awarded the Brunton Memorial Prize as the most distinguished graduate of the year.
Professor Eteiba said: “I am deeply honoured to be invited to such an esteemed occasion, particularly in a year marking the 40th anniversary of the Hong Kong College of Physicians and celebrating the legacy of Professor McFadzean, whose roots in Scotland make this invitation especially meaningful.
“My lecture, AI in Medicine: Shaping the Future While Preserving the Human Touch, builds upon Professor McFadzean’s legacy of clinical excellence, physician training and patient care, while exploring how we keep these values at the forefront during a time of rapid technological advancement.”
During his visit, Professor Eteiba met with Fellows and Members. He said: “I always enjoy connecting with our international Fellows and Members. I am reminded of the responsibility I carry as President of this global community.
“Hearing about their work, lived experiences and the shared challenges we all face is incredibly valuable and helps shape the College’s ongoing support for our Members worldwide.
“I was particularly delighted to meet Dr Rosie Young. During my lecture, I discussed the connections between our two Colleges, including a photograph of Professor McFadzean with a young Dr Young, who would go on to become a world-renowned physician.
“While preparing for her MRCP examination in 1959, she regularly used our College library while working at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. It was a privilege to meet Dr Young in person and to hear that she is still practicing medicine today.”
Later, at a dinner hosted at Government House and organised by Professor Daniel Tak Mao Chan, President of the Hong Kong College of Physicians, Professor Eteiba had the opportunity to meet with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, John Lee Ka-chiu. Their discussions centred on how the partnership between the two organisations could be further developed in the years ahead.
