  • Glasgow Prestwick Airport in talks to launch fifth China connection with Nanjing
  • People’s Government of Jiangsu Province backing new link
  • Move will connect Scotland with one of China’s ‘largest provincial economies’

Glasgow Prestwick Airport has announced it is in talks to establish a new cargo route with China’s Nanjing Lukou International Airport in 2027.

The plans were discussed during a meeting in Nanjing between Prestwick’s chief executive officer Jules Matteoni and regional director Colin Dai, the vice-governor of the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province, Ma Shiguang, and local officials.

During the meeting the Provincial Government confirmed its backing for a new route between the two airports.

“China is an increasingly important part of our cargo network, and a direct link with Nanjing would strengthen the options available to businesses moving goods between the United Kingdom and one of China’s largest provincial economies,” said Matteoni.

“We are working with our partners in Jiangsu to establish a route that can support long term demand, strengthen trade links, and create economic opportunities at both ends of the connection.”

In a statement today, Prestwick said discussions will now continue on the commercial and operational requirements for the proposed service, with further details on the operator and launch schedule to be announced in the coming months.

“Every new connection into China creates another opportunity for exporters to reach customers and supply chains more directly,” said Dai.

“Jiangsu has a substantial manufacturing base, and we see a clear opportunity to build stronger cargo flows in both directions while giving businesses in Scotland and across the United Kingdom greater access to the Chinese market.”

Glasgow Prestwick Airport already hosts over 20 weekly scheduled services to China, with direct links to Ürümqi, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Shanghai.

The proposed route would build on the Scottish airport’s growing cargo connections with China and its position as a freight and e-commerce gateway serving the UK and northwest Europe.
